President Donald Trump lashed out at the “Fake and Artificial News” while attempting to clarify his remarks about Iran bombing Los Angeles and San Diego.
The president first made the comments at a Monday rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, telling the crowd in full:
And again, remember, with the war, it’s just artificial. It’s a little bit high. It’s a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe. They could take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay, and it’s gonna be over with very soon. It’s essentially almost over with. And they might keep going a little long. You know, they always say, “They have a big threshold for pain.” They need it, let me tell you. But it’s gonna end very soon. And it’ll end one way or the other. And your gas and your gasoline and all the other things.
The moment caused turmoil amongst many — California politicians in particular.
“Disgusting and disqualifying,” wrote California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on social media.
Others, like CNN’s Daniel Dale, argued that the president’s full remarks, rather than a clip, are necessary for context.
Trump again made similar statements at a Wednesday rally in Texas, vowing:
We can’t let them have a nuclear weapon. And I’ll tell you what. Oil: a little more, maybe more than a little, but a lot of people thought it’d be 3, 4, 5 times that. When I went in, I thought it could be much higher than that. But we are paying less than under the Biden administration; he didn’t do anything. He gave you the highest inflation in history. He didn’t do anything. But you want to see trauma You want to see problems? And I said it the other day: Let them hit a missile into San Diego or Los Angeles. On the way — let them hit — you want to see a horror show? You want to see problems? Let them hit San Diego. Let them hit Los Angeles. And you want to see some bad things happen; you want to see a country that would be in freefall. We’re not going to let that happen. We protect our cities, we protect our country. We’re not letting that happen. And they’d use it too.
On Truth Social Thursday, despite previously waving off questions from reporters on the subject, Trump wrote:
The Fake and Artificial News is out there trying to say that I’m inviting the enemy to bomb San Diego and Los Angeles when, in actuality, what I was talking about was that a temporary increase in the price of Gasoline is a small price to pay for Iran not having a Nuclear Weapon and, if you want to see a big price, can you imagine what it would be like if they bombed San Diego and/or Los Angeles? All I was doing was making a comparison between paying a little more, for a short time, for Gasoline, versus the bombing of our Major Cities. Everybody knew that, the Fake News knew it as well, but they continue to go out and say that I am asking the enemy to bomb two Cities that I love. It’s totally clear what I say but, these people are Degenerates, and think they can continuously get away with Fake News! President DONALD J. TRUMP
