Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Investments and Industry Alexander Poulev took part in the opening of a new nitrocellulose production plant at military equipment and firearms manufacturer Arsenal AD in Kazanlak (central Bulgaria).
“This is another important step in the development of Bulgaria’s defence industry. This is the direction we need to pursue towards a modern and competitive Bulgarian industry, high-tech manufacturing and well-paid jobs,” Poulev said, as quoted by the Ministry’s press centre.
The Deputy Prime Minister stressed the importance of investment in the defence industry for technological development and the competitiveness of Bulgarian companies.
“We are working side by side with one main goal: to modernize the defence industry and create more opportunities for people and regions. Investments of this kind and the expansion of production capacity are precisely the results we seek through our daily work, and they motivate us to press ahead with even greater determination – for industry and for the regions,” Poulev said.
He noted that investment in technological upgrades and expanded production capacity is crucial to improving the competitiveness of Bulgarian industry and supporting regional development.
The opening ceremony, held on Thursday, was also attended by President Iliana Iotova, Stara Zagora Regional Governor Kaloyan Damyanov and representatives of local authorities in the region.
The new plant is part of Arsenal’s large-scale investment programme aimed at increasing production capacity and expanding its product range. The total investment under the programme exceeds EUR 300 million, the Ministry said.
The plant uses fully automated technology. Its commissioning will increase production capacity, improve working conditions and safety, and reduce environmental impacts.
Last week, Poulev said that the aim was to have German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall’s plant in Bulgaria operational within 30 months. He said he had held a series of highly constructive meetings with Rheinmetall representatives to discuss the main parameters of what he described as an important strategic deal for the Bulgarian state.
“The next steps are clear, and we have Rheinmetall’s full understanding on this: first, Bulgaria’s interests must be protected through full technology transfer, which we can use to modernize our enterprises and capabilities in the defence industry,” Poulev said.
