Executives at Anthropic, OpenAI, and other AI companies are planning for fallout from a “catastrophic AI event” that insiders fear could occur within a year, according to a new report.

Axios’ Maria Curi reported on Friday that top AI executives are “privately gaming out scenarios” that would include something catastrophic happening with AI, like a cyberattack that leaves people cut off from power, their finances, or even water.

“Officials anticipate a large-scale event, most likely a cyberattack, that shuts down access to financial services, internet connectivity, or even power and water,” the report reads.

Anthropic declined to comment, while OpenAI said gaming out such scenarios is regular procedure and they do not see any outcome as “inevitable.”

“OpenAI conducts preparedness exercises where teams discuss and work through a range of potential scenarios. These scenarios are not treated as inevitable, but are meant to help us prepare for a variety of circumstances,” a company spokesperson said.

Curi also reported that “many AI industry insiders” told Axios that they anticipate a “major event” occurring with AI in the next six months to a year.

AI industry executives have warned the rapidly-developing technology needs more oversight, though President Donald Trump has insisted that existing regulation and law enforcement agencies will be able to police any illegal or threatening activity. He’s dismissed doomsday scenarios around AI as a “hoax.”

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is among those calling for more oversight on AI, warning in a statement that was endorsed by other tech leaders that “we must slow down the pace.”

Amodei noted problems already occurring with rogue AI agents and warned AI could take control of the internet in six months to a year.

That warning followed Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigning from his position and going public with his concerns, sparking major debate after predicting the technology could “kill us all” within a decade.
