An off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was shot early Friday morning after he allegedly assaulted a 72-year-old man in Fresno, California.
Fresno police said a woman found a strange man lying on her lawn at around 3:30 a.m. She went inside and informed her father, who confronted the man and told him to leave. That’s when police said 32-year-old David Gonzalez of Texas, who “appeared intoxicated and agitated,” assaulted the man. The daughter tried to come to her father’s aid, but Gonzalez physically attacked her, authorities said.
“When the victim’s daughter tried to intervene on her father’s behalf, Gonzalez physically attacked her, at which time she went to the ground,” police said.
Fearing for his and his daughter’s safety, the father drew a firearm and shot Gonzalez once in the midsection.
The woman called her boyfriend, a police officer who was off-duty at the time, who went to the house and handcuffed Gonzalez. Gonzalez was taken to a hospital, where he is in serious condition.
Police later discovered that Gonzalez works as an ICE agent.
“It is unknown at this time why Gonzalez was in the area at the time of the incident, but it has been confirmed he was off-duty and alone at the time of the incident,” Fresno police said.
The father is not facing charges. Meanwhile, Gonzalez is in custody for felony assault. Local officials said they are investigating why Gonzalez was in the neighborhood, adding that they have been in contact with ICE.
ICE has been in the news again this week for the wrong reasons. On Thursday, ICE agents in New York City shot into a vehicle containing a man and a five-year-old boy. The man was struck and survived, and the boy was physically unharmed.
