Asked about Friday’s diesel deal between the Presidents of Russia and the United States, Bulgarian head of State Iliana Iotova Saturday commented: “I view all these matters as part of a broader set of issues; they will likely be relevant in some way to the talks with Ukraine in the US; representatives of European institutions have been invited there.”
DPA reports that US President Donald Trump on Friday stated that Russia had agreed to supply diesel fuel to the US and global markets to help lower prices – a move that drew sharp criticism from Ukraine. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to the shipments during a “highly successful discussion” over the phone.
Iotova told reporters that no predictions should be made in advance, because “we are counting on specific steps and viewing all these events and agreements as a single, comprehensive question and answer.” “Let us see what this agreement specifically entails, because this is still preliminary information; I cannot commit to a more precise position,” the President emphasized.
She hopes the deal will have a global impact because, in her words, the shortage of diesel and other fuels is causing difficulties throughout Europe. Iotova also noted that shipments through the Strait of Hormuz are being disrupted, and that the transition period for supplies from Russia expires on January 1, 2027. In other words, Europe has no way to secure supplies, the President noted. “More information will become available in the coming days, and we will see what prediction we can make,” the head of State emphasized, adding that the hope is for prices to fall.
Commenting on Thursday’s visit to Bulgaria of Kyrylo Budanov, Chief of Staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which became public knowledge on Friday, Iotova explained that the presidential administration had received neither a request nor an invitation for a meeting, and that she had not spoken with Budanov. “What I heard yesterday [Friday] from the Prime Minister is part of Bulgaria’s active foreign policy; Bulgaria is stating its position on the conflict in Ukraine at all levels,” the President told reporters. “It was a useful meeting because Budanov was leaving for the US, from which we expect big news today [Saturday] or tomorrow – or at least, I dare to hope – regarding concrete steps in the peace negotiation process,” Iotova said.
