The 1st Thread of Generations Festival was unveiled in Montana on Saturday. It combines the Babina Dushitsa culinary festival and the Young Writers’ Alley, which were held separately in previous years.
The Thread of Generations Festival was unveiled by National Assembly Chair Mihaela Dotsova. Also attending the event were ParIiament Deputy Chair Ivan Angelov, Deputy Culture Minister Zornitsa Grekova, MPs from the three regions, Metropolitan Pachomius of Vidin, the regional governors of Montana, Vidin, and Vratsa, mayors from Northwestern Bulgaria, and citizens.
Within the folk cuisine festival, about 30 writers from across Bulgaria prepared dishes. They showcased unique regional recipes made exclusively with locally sourced ingredients. The festival is named after thyme, which is known in this region as babina dushitsa.
On the Young Writers’ Alley, there were numerous tents where writers chatted with readers and presented their work. A mobile library with a bookmobile from Vidin was a guest at the event.
In a separate tent, ceremonial breads from the travelling exhibition of the Museum of Bread and Traditional Cuisine in Koprivshtitsa were on display.
The festival also featured a fashion show of traditional national costumes presented by children and adults from dance troupes in Montana Region.
A concert by folk ensembles served as a side event to the festival.
Opening the festival, National Assembly Chair Dotsova said that Northwestern Bulgaria, where she is from, is “a lovely piece of land that always calls us back to it, no matter where any of us may be.” In her words, Montana Region and Northwestern Bulgaria preserve and honour traditions, which are “the thread that has preserved us over the centuries.” She noted that the youthful spirit and energy of young writers, who are creating something new, also play an important role in the festival. “I am convinced that the next Radichkov is here in the writers’ tents. In 20 to 30 years, he will write about how a little cloud, enjoying the colourful tapestry of the autumn mountains, hovers over the square in Montana, observes, thinks, and imperceptibly transforms into a small spindle that weaves the thread of generations,” said Dotsova.
At the opening, greetings were read from Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova and the Ministry of Agriculture.
Deputy Regional Governor Zornitsa Mihaylova, main organizer of the festival, told BTA: “For us, this marks the beginning of a more open regional administration that is not limited solely to its administrative functions, but seeks opportunities to bring people together, support culture, and play an active role in public life.”
