Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) admitted to Bill Maher that he “f*cked up” when it came to his vote to confirm Pete Hegseth in his role as defense secretary.
Friday’s Real Time was the latest stop on Tillis’s media tour to promote his new book How to Lose Friends and Antagonize Presidents, where he gets candid about his tensions with President Donald Trump over the years as he finishes out his term in the Senate.
Maher pressed Tillis at one point about being a Republican “maverick,” but not when it came to voting, noting he voted to confirm Hegseth, Tulsi Gabbard, Kristi Noem, and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. despite having reservations about all of them.
“You had reservations about all of them, but you still voted for them. How do you justify that discrepancy between the rhetoric of the maverick and the vote?” Maher asked Tillis.
Tillis explained:
If you take a look at it, I also pushed some people out even before I voted on them.
Matt Gaetz is one that came to mind that I worked with him to make him recognize he couldn’t do it. That was one of the first nominees sent forward.
You know, at the end of the day, I voted for a lot of…I got criticized by Republicans for voting for [Barack] Obama nominees back in the last two years that I was there with Obama.
I got criticized for voting [Joe] Biden nominees.
At the end of the day, presidents have to form a government. And I was giving them the benefit of the doubt, but I was talking to somebody earlier this week.
They’re saying, well, you voted to confirm them. I said, I voted with the unanimous vote out of Senate Armed Services Committee. Now I’m telling you, I f*cked up and he needs to go. What else do we need to talk about?
Maher pressed further by telling Tillis he could have done more by voting to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, but Tillis accused Democrats of not taking that process “seriously.”
Tillis also called out the Pentagon’s plan to livestream the firing squad execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, who killed 13 people at the Fort Hood post in Killeen, Texas in 2009.
Tillis said he’s all for the execution of Hasan, but he called livestreaming the execution “bullsh*t.”
“We’ve got to stop that. This is bullsh*t. There’s no way we should be doing that,” he said.
Tillis added he’s “shocked” Hegseth hasn’t asked to be one of the shooters on the firing squad.
“This is performative at the worst level and it has to be reversed,” he said.
