Interviewed on Nova TV, Vladimir Dimitrov, head of the Bulgarian Cyber Police said that threats have been made against Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev in the latest wave of bomb threat emails sent to hundreds of Bulgarian institutions.
According to Dimitrov, the latest emails, sent about a day and a half ago, mentioned the Minister by name and contained a threat that he would be harmed.
“We are working on several different scenarios, and at this stage we cannot say definitively whether there is one person behind the threats or several,” Dimitrov said. He added that there was no conclusive evidence regarding the motives behind the threats, noting that the mention of the Interior Minister by name indicated that the attack was directed both at him and at the State and its institutions as a whole.
The senders’ main aim was to destabilize institutions, create chaos in society and undermine public trust, Dimitrov said. He added that an attempt to undermine the Interior Minister could not be ruled out, although there was currently no conclusive evidence to support this theory.
Dozens of bomb threats have been reported, with hundreds of Bulgarian institutions among the recipients, including schools, kindergartens and airports. The emails are sent in separate waves, once or twice a week, Dimitrov said.
According to the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, the threats are sent through compromised computers and servers in various parts of the world. Anonymization tools such as the Tor network, VPN services and proxy servers are also used, making it difficult to identify those responsible. The Directorate is pursuing several lines of inquiry and cooperating with international partners and companies whose infrastructure has been used to send the messages.
Dimitrov said that action plans had been prepared ahead of the upcoming election, involving the Interior Ministry, the State Agency for National Security, intelligence services and international partners. At present, there is no trend indicating an increase in cyberattacks against state institutions related to the electoral process.
He also commented on the spread of illegal content online, including insults and defamatory statements. He advised people affected to turn to the courts if they wished to seek legal redress, adding that the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime could also assist with reporting such content and having it removed.
The Directorate also receives alerts about websites offering medicinal products illegally, he said.
