Presidential Candidate Gurov: Oversight of Government Must Be in Safe Hands to Ensure It Does Its Job 2026

Presidential candidate Andrey Gurov said that oversight of government must be in safe hands and that an independent presidential institution could ensure this.
Meeting with residents of Pernik on Sunday, Gurov identified easier travel to Sofia, resolving the problem of unpleasant odours in the Bela Voda neighbourhood and creating more opportunities for young people as priorities. This year, 13 complaints about the odours had been filed and 10 inspections carried out, but the source of the pollution had not been identified, he said.
The president does not build roads or conduct inspections, and people will not see him holding a shovel, but the president and the presidential institution have a very powerful tool – their voice, Gurov said.
He cited examples from the work of the caretaker government he headed, including organizing fair elections, evacuating 2,600 Bulgarians from a conflict zone, and introducing support for people affected by rising fuel prices.
Gurov said data on around 7,000 public procurement procedures had been published to increase transparency. Within 40 days, EUR 180 million had been allocated to 179 municipalities, regardless of their mayors’ political affiliation.
The president should support the government when it performs well and oppose decisions that are not in the public interest, he said.
“I am not promising to be a saviour, but I can make several commitments: to call problems by their real names and to work for a secure and independent Bulgaria,” Gurov said.
