Presidential candidate Kostadin Kostadinov, leader of the Vazrazhdane party, said Bulgaria’s president must understand the national interest and have the character and backbone to defend it, regardless of whether Bulgaria’s international partners and allies approve of the position.
Meeting with supporters in Yambol, he said the national interest means Bulgarians living well, enjoying security and earning good incomes, while prices must not undermine the Bulgarian economy or harm citizens, he said.
As an example of defending the national interest, Kostadinov cited the rejection a month ago of a proposal to lift sanctions on Russia and allow the export of Russian oil products to Bulgaria. He said Vazrazhdane would resubmit the proposal to Parliament on Monday, seeking to remove sanctions in this area. In his view, this would lead to lower fuel prices.
“Had the proposal we put forward been accepted by the ruling parties and their coalition partners, in this case GERB, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Continue the Change and Democratic Bulgaria, diesel would not now cost around BGN 4 per litre and petrol BGN 3.50,” Kostadinov said, adding that prices would have been 50% lower.
Kostadinov publicly asked presidential candidates Iliana Iotova and Andrey Gurov if they wanted sanctions to be lifted so that Bulgarians could buy cheaper fuel or preferred them to remain in force. “My question is rhetorical. We all know they support the sanctions and that the EU will not lift them,” Kostadinov said.
