Commenting on the recent drone attacks on two merchant ships in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, Progressive Bulgaria Floor Leader Petar Vitanov told bTV on Sunday that there is still no irrefutable evidence on the perpetrator of the attacks. “Logic suggests that these were Russian strikes, but when we speak on behalf of the State, we cannot afford to rely on assumptions,” he underscored.
Vitanov noted that this is not a matter of “backing down.” “We continue to maintain that this is the working hypothesis – that these were most likely Russian strikes – but ultimately, we are also turning to our partner intelligence services, including Romanian, Turkish, and NATO agencies – if we can identify it together and be absolutely certain,” he explained.
Vitanov explained further that the evidence being sought is primarily related to debris from unmanned aerial vehicles or unmanned underwater drones. He added that what is happening is not an attack against Bulgaria, because it is taking place several miles outside the country’s territorial waters. “According to the intelligence data we have, more than 460 ships have been struck since the beginning of the year – the majority in the last few months – with strikes coming from both sides: Ukraine and Russia,” Vitanov said.
The war has spread beyond the territories of Russia and Ukraine and has become a full-scale conflict within the Black Sea; even more concerning is that vessels from third countries are being struck, with slightly more having been hit by the Ukrainian side, Vitanov said further.
In his words, both countries use merchant ships not only to transport the cargo listed on their manifests, but also – very often – to transport troops and weapons. “We have no qualms about saying that this is most likely a Russian drone, but until we have any evidence, we cannot make that public,” Vitanov said. “If this is proven, all necessary measures will be taken,” he assured citizens.
Vitanov described the recent meeting of the Consultative Council on National Security with the President as constructive. “GERB leader Boyko Borissov is an experienced enough politician, and even then, on the spot, he was convinced of the appropriateness of the declaration. I find it hard to understand the logic behind why, the very next day, he took the liberty of criticizing the Council’s work,” Vitanov commented.
Bulgaria must strengthen its position, advocate for stability in the Black Sea, and seek initiatives to reduce tensions, Vitanov believes.
Commenting on Thursday’s visit to Bulgaria of Kyrylo Budanov, Chief of Staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which became public knowledge only on Friday, Vitanov said it is natural for a person of such high rank to seek this level of confidentiality.
