Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev told The Black Sea and Eastern Europe: Key to European Security forum on Monday in Sofia that threats in the Black Sea are much more serious at the moment in view of the war in Ukraine and are expected to remain serious even after the end of the conflict.
The forum is organized by the European League for Economic Cooperation (ELEC) and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of ELEC.
Demerdzhiev added that the country is aiming to acquire modern and reliable equipment, including ships and anti-drone systems. When asked about security in the Black Sea, the minister replied that a number of measures are being taken and that the issue does not only concern Bulgaria, but is also important for NATO and the European Union. “We are working extremely actively in both structures to strengthen their capacity,” he added.
At the opening of the conference, Demerdzhiev said that four main risks are emerging. The first is hybrid threats, including sea mines, unmanned systems, cyberattacks and sabotage. “We need risk monitoring, early warning and timely exchange of information,” the minister said.
Another risk is the vulnerability of critical infrastructure. Damage to one unit can affect more than one country, so its resilience requires cooperation, readiness for joint action and timely response, as well as reliable public information, said Demerdzhiev.
He pointed out that the third risk is organized crime. After the end of the war in Ukraine, drug trafficking, human trafficking and other illegal activities are expected to increase, which could worsen the security environment. “We are making efforts to prevent these processes,” the minister said.
The fourth aspect is the protection of the population and preparedness for response to disasters and accidents, Demerdzhiev added.
