The President’s Administration website lacks a Cyrillic domain name and uses Russian-style rather than Bulgarian Cyrillic characters, Yes, Bulgaria Co-Chair Bozhidar Bozhanov said in a Facebook post cited by the party’s press service on Monday.
“If [President Iliana] Iotova is so keen on everything being in Cyrillic, why does not the President’s Administration have a Cyrillic domain name,” Bozhanov asked, adding that its use was not only technically possible but mandatory.
He cited a provision of the Electronic Governance Act, which he said he had drafted a decade ago, requiring administrative bodies to use the national top-level domains “.bg” and its Cyrillic equivalent. Although the President is not formally an administrative body, Bozhanov argued that the requirement should have been applied to the President’s Administration during Iotova’s nine years as Vice President and nine months as President.
Bozhanov also recalled an initiative he launched as minister of e-government to promote Bulgarian Cyrillic forms online. Guidelines subsequently adopted require websites to use fonts that display lowercase letters in their Bulgarian forms, rather than the Russian-style versions.
He said several institutions had updated their fonts, while the President’s Administration continued to use Russian-style Cyrillic, concluding that its commitment to protecting the script was “only words.”
In late March, President Iotova initiated the third International Forum on the Cyrillic Script, dedicated to “Spiritual Heritage in the Digital Age.” She stressed the importance of preserving and developing the Bulgarian language in the digital era.
