The production, “The Bulgarian Code: The Embroidery”. is dedicated to deciphering the Bulgarian soul and spirit, President Iliana Iotova said in her remarks at the 16th annual Wonders of Bulgaria Cultural Heritage Awards, held at the Ivan Vazov National Theatre on Monday.
“This evening, we are talking about the masculine strength and feminine beauty of Bulgarian embroidery,” Iotova said. She noted that the performance showcases white costumes, woven fabrics, intricate knots and beautiful traditional attire, the sound of the Bulgarian bagpipe, the Cyrillic letters and the symbols woven into them, which have glorified the Bulgarian people for more than 12 centuries.
The President spoke about Bulgarian writing and the role of language in bringing different ethnic groups together to form a nation. In her words, Bulgaria has extended its influence far beyond its geographical borders and helped shape Slavic civilization.
Iotova addressed Slavka Bozukova, Chair of the Cultural Heritage Society, and thanked her for maintaining the Wonders of Bulgaria initiative over the past 16 years. “The wonders of Bulgaria do not end after these 16 years,” the President said. She noted that history, archaeology and monuments recounting the past can be found at every turn.
“Today, we are searching for what brings us together. We are searching for what enables us to stand united and uncover these wonders,” Iotova said. According to her, these are the talent and hard work of generations of Bulgarians.
The President noted that Bulgarian history brings together love for the homeland with the colours of the earth, fire, the sun and the sea. She emphasized that Bulgaria has existed as a state for 14 centuries and called on Bulgarians to know their history and pass on the Bulgarian language and the virtues taught to them by their parents and ancestors to future generations.
“One of Bulgaria’s greatest wonders is us – the Bulgarians, our people,” Iotova said. She expressed her wish that the number of friends and allies of Wonders of Bulgaria would continue to grow and that every year would bring renewed recognition of the wonder of the Bulgarian spirit.
The event is organized by the Cultural Heritage Society, the Bulgarian representative of Europa Nostra, the European organization dedicated to safeguarding cultural heritage. The initiative is held under the auspices of the President of Bulgaria.
