The story surrounding James Talarico’s nearly two-week absence due to a bout with the flu still makes former Democratic strategist and The Huddle co-host Dan Turrentine and former White House communications director Sean Spicer “nervous” because the Senate candidate didn’t post on social media during the time he was sick, the pair said on the podcast Monday.
Talarico, who has Type 1 diabetes, returned to the campaign trail Friday. A 2020 study published by the National Library of Medicine noted that people who have diabetes “are two times more likely to die from influenza than people with no underlying medical condition” and that the “mechanisms underlying this susceptibility are poorly understood.”
Turrentine said of Talarico’s disappearance, “Talarico has been very blunt. The campaign’s been blunt.”
But, he added, his concern is for the race. “If you’re lying, it is over, and you could cost us the United States Senate,” Turrentine added.
“There’s something that’s still not there,” Spicer also told Turrentine and NewsNation White House Correspondent Kellie Meyer. “[It] makes me nervous.”
Spicer continued, “And I’m like, ‘Dude, you guys have doubled down on this unbelievably’. And here’s the last thing I’ll say —” before Turrentine jumped in, “Prove the right wrong!”
“Right? But just come out and say, ‘Look, here’s the deal,’” Spicer answered. “… I do… because something doesn’t add up. And you don’t need to have a medical degree to say you have the flu and you never posted anything for 10 days. I mean, lie in bed, put yourself with a bunch of vitamins and say look, I’m trying to get healthy.”
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has also noted that people who have pre-existing conditions are more prone to developing serious complications after having the flu.
Talarico made an appearance during the second weekend of the Austin City Limits Music Festival on October 9. “James Talarico is back on the campaign trail talking to voters at Austin City Limits,” JT Ennis, spokesperson for Talarico’s campaign, said in a statement sent to Mediaite.
The candidate’s appearance at the festival was also confirmed by Texas Tribune reporter Kayla Guo.
Talarico explained his disappearance Sunday. “Yeah, I got the flu and I’m feeling much better and I’m glad I had a chance to recover,” he told NBC 5 in Dallas-Fort Worth reporter Phil Prazan. “You know, if you don’t take the opportunity to get well, sometimes you can get even sicker, and so I’m glad we made the decision to just take the week go get better, and now, I’m glad to be back on the trail.”
In 2021, Talarico shared he experienced a medical episode in which he “almost died,” which directly preceded his diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes.
