‘Doesn’t Even Matter’: NY Dem Dismisses Rap Sheet of Migrant ICE Shot, Now Accused of Terrorizing Neighbors With a Machete 2026

Democratic Party House candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier joined controversial streamer Hasan Piker on his show over the weekend to discuss the ICE shooting of Oscar Belgal late last week, which sparked anger and fierce protests in New York City.

Chevalier called for NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch to step down following the protests, during which she was pushed to the ground in the chaos.

“What is the rap sheet for this person that Jessica Tisch is alleging is this criminal, and that the ICE apprehension was valid from that perspective?” Piker asked Chevalier.

“You know, I was just so angry as I was listening to it. I have gone back to her remarks to make sure that I was correct in our statement about it. But to me, it doesn’t even matter, right? It doesn’t even matter,” Chevalier said of Belgal’s criminal record and illegal status in the country.

“Police Commissioner Tisch came out, and I understand that it is her role to provide more information, and that is why she comes to these press conferences. But rather than condemn ICE, rather than condemn the shooting or the events that had just taken place, she started to villainize Oscar, right?” Belgal continued, adding:

Villainize him, and, by extension, villainize anyone who was in his position. Both the biggest, but also the most straightforward, is that we need to abolish ICE. There is no reason for this institution to exist, and that is something that happens, right, on the congressional level. We need to make sure that we are actually passing the Melt ICE Act, right, and stripping all of the funds from this institution and putting them toward a dignified immigration system that actually gives people a pathway to citizenship.

And we need to make sure that we’re working with all levels of government to make sure sanctuary policies are actually upheld, right? If there’s somebody as high-level as the police commissioner who is not following that, I think it is on them to recognize that they are not reflecting the values and the policies that New Yorkers want to see in the city, right? And it’s on them to reflect on that and step down. He needs to be released. He is currently in MDC in Brooklyn.

Piker later added, “The idea that they are grabbing a criminal off the street, that ICE is grabbing a criminal non-citizen off the street, is totally ridiculous. By the way, per the New York Times, these crimes were non-violent drug offenses and robbery.”

“Put yourself in Oscar’s shoes. You have your child in the backseat. You’re picking him up from school, and all of a sudden you see masked men coming towards your car, banging on it, pulling out guns. You’re running. I’m sorry, but you were protecting your child,” Chevalier added.

“What are some parting words you want to leave with the audience?” Piker asked to end the interview.

“Hi, chat, and f*ck ICE and abolish it,” Chevalier replied.

The New York Post reported the day after Chevalier said Belgal’s past crimes do not matter, that he had terrorized his neighbors, including pulling a machete on one of them during an argument. Chevalier, backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D), won her Democratic Party primary and is all but guaranteed election to the House come November, representing the district Belgal lived in.

“The illegal migrant shot by federal ICE agents in a chaotic Bronx showdown terrorized his former neighbors with a machete—and a terrified resident said Saturday he’s relieved the accused gangbanger has finally been taken off the streets,” reported the Post in its Sunday cover story, adding:

Dominican Republic-native Oscar Belgal, 28, who authorities said has ties to the bloodthirsty Trinitarios street gang, wreaked havoc at the Washington Heights apartment building where he lived until about a year ago, according to a one-time neighbor.

Belgal’s past criminal record included a 2023 conviction for armed robbery and a 2025 arrest for allegedly selling deadly substances, including heroin and fentanyl.
