The Senate campaign of Texas State Rep. James Talarico (D) allowed a reporter from The New York Times to review time-stamped images from his home security camera footage showing that he was at home recovering from the flu earlier this month like he said.
Talarico is facing off against scandal-plagued Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the battle to be the Lone Star State’s next senator, and the race has become one of the most expensive and most bitter in U.S. history. Paxton defeated incumbent Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) in the primary with a boost from President Donald Trump’s endorsement, but that win required a runoff, burned through campaign funds, and put a spotlight on the series of scandals, lawsuits, and other controversies that have dogged the AG for years.
Recently, Paxton has faced a series of leaked audio clips in which he blamed Trump’s midterm GOP convention for dragging down his poll numbers, complaining that DC is controlling his campaign, calling Trump’s Iran War and the connected affordability issues his campaign’s “biggest problem,” and claiming that Cornyn “wants me to lose.”
When Talarico announced he had the flu and dropped off the campaign trail for almost two weeks, it looked like Paxton had finally stumbled into some good luck, but instead the campaign chose to amplify several right-wing influencers who were sharing their wild and unfounded speculations that Talarico had fled the state to seek mental health treatment. Even more unhinged theories bubbled up in MAGA circles online, accusing Talarico of seeking some sort of transgender medical procedure and other assorted conspiracies.
Paxton demanded “proof of life” from Talarico, the Democratic nominee popped up smiling and shaking hands with attendees at a music festival in Austin, the medical facility the conspiracists claimed Talarico was at issued a statement denying he had ever been a patient of theirs, and the entire kerfuffle helped highlight Talarico’s attacks on Paxton for refusing to agree to debate him.
Then, on Monday, Times political reporter Bayliss Wagner reported that she had “reviewed time-stamped images from a security camera at Mr. Talarico’s home, which were provided by his campaign on the condition they not be published for security reasons.”
In the images, Talarico can be seen “around the exterior of the home and at its entrances between Oct. 1 and Oct. 8,” wrote Wagner.
“I would explain why I went to the trouble of writing a story on this, but if you were on this website, you already know,” wrote Wagner in a tweet about her article, referring to the “Wild West of misinformation” that had arisen from what she attributed to a combination of an atmosphere of “mistrust of politicians and the mainstream news media” and “online algorithms that incentivize outrageous theories.”
