In conversations that took place over the phone with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Tuesday, Prime Minister Rumen Radev called for joint efforts to put a stop to the attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea.
Von der Leyen and Rutte expressed their appreciation for Bulgaria’s swift response in rescuing the sailors in distress, as well as solidarity regarding the attacks on merchant ships near Bulgarian territorial waters and a readiness to provide allied support in clarifying the circumstances surrounding these incidents. The Prime Minister raised the issue of providing support to strengthen Bulgaria’s capabilities for the surveillance and control of its maritime and airspace.
Radev reported that he will initiate talks with Romania and Turkiye to put forward joint proposals to ensure the safety of shipping in the Black Sea. He will also raise this topic at the forthcoming European Council meeting on October 15 and 16.
