Prime Minister Rumen Radev could have spoken directly with Russian President Putin or his Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov about the latest drone attacks on merchant vessels off the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, former Foreign Minister and now MP of GERB-UDF Georg Georgiev said here Tuesday. He was speaking at a news briefing of his party in Parliament. “Prime Minister Radev could have spared himself summoning the Russian Ambassador, who is far below his level, and instead call directly Spokesman Peskov of President Putin or President Erdogan, who spoke to Putin last week, and ask directly, ‘Do we owe these explosions to you?’,” said Georgiev.
“I doubt it that Ukraine is trying to kill its own people or disrupt its own supply chains,” he added.
Two merchant vessels, including a Ukrainian one with a crew of Ukrainians and Azeri, were hit by drones off the northern Bulgarian Black Sea coast in the small hours on Tuesday, sinking one of the ships. Prime Minister Radev called the attacks “absolutely unacceptable” and summoned the Russian Ambassador in Sofia.
Fellow GERB-UDF MP Daniel Mitov told the press that his party is calling for an emergency meeting of the legislature, including a session behind closed doors, to hear what the government and the security services know.
“In this way we will see if the power-holders are willing to solve, together with the opposition, the security problems caused by the Russian aggression in Ukraine,” Mitov said.
Georg Georgiev added that the government’s “soft position – or no position at all – doesn’t pay off”. “We all want peace and support an end to the bloody war, and we all want the situation to calm – but it does not mean abdicating from defending our national security and standing up for the national interests,” he said.
He reiterated his party’s position in favour of “a firm response to the aggressor for what happened in the Black Sea” and warned that failure to give such response will result in more of the same and more hit vessels.
Georgiev described the summoning of the Russian Ambassador as “a smoke screen”. “Everybody who is knowledgeable about international relations understands that an ambassador is not equal to a prime minister. There are many levels that need to be activated before that and the Foreign Ministry should have declared in an appropriate way our country’s firm position,” he said.
Daniel Mitov said there was an apparent reluctance on the part of the ruling majority to convene in Parliament, describing this as a “rejection of parliamentarism”. He said that when the aggressor is not named, the aggressor immediately interprets this as weakness and as an opportunity to encroach further into the security space of the party that has failed to respond firmly and unequivocally. “NATO guarantees our security, but we must first say that we are concerned about this security. NATO does not tell member states what to do, but asks them to assess their own security. If they have concerns, the applicable mechanisms are activated,” he said. “We will be seeking resignations in due course. The question is what is happening with our security and whether those in power are prepared to respond adequately,” Mitov noted.
In response to a journalist’s question, Daniel Mitov said that it was not US President Donald Trump who determined who should be President of Ukraine, but the Ukrainian people who elected their own president.
