Most Americans think President Donald Trump is more concerned with leveraging his presidency to make himself richer than helping Joe Citizen, according to a Tuesday poll from The Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
The poll found 41% of Americans believe Trump has done something illegal in an effort to personally profit from the presidency, while another 18% said he has done something “unethical, but not illegal.”
Only 18% said he has done “nothing wrong,” while another 21% said they did not know.
And when it comes to his personal business interests, 75% of respondents said Trump has “a lot” or “some” interest in making himself richer while in office. But when it comes to prioritizing “people like me,” 51% of respondents said Trump doesn’t seem to care “at all,” while only 29% said he seemed to care “a lot” or “some” about helping them improve their lives.
“Views differ significantly by party, with about 8 in 10 Democrats believing he has done something illegal, compared with about 3 in 10 independents and about 1 in 10 Republicans,” the AP-NORC noted in its write-up. It also said the numbers were similarly flipped in 2023, with Republicans believing then-President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden were illegally profiting from the White House.
Tuesday’s survey comes after Trump’s net worth has reportedly climbed from about $2.3 billion to $6.5 billion while in office.
A July filing showed Trump made more than $1 billion from his crypto ventures last year; The filing reported roughly $500 million in income from World Liberty Financial, the crypto company founded with his sons Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and Barron Trump, along with approximately $635 million from sales of the $TRUMP meme coin.
When asked about it by CNBC’s Joe Kernen, Trump said he was not following his finances while he was in office, but there was “nothing illegal” and “nothing wrong with it.”
The survey was based on 2,140 respondents over the phone, and the margin of sampling error was +/-2.9 percentage points.
