Bulgaria must defend its national interests and pursue an independent foreign policy, said Kostadin Kostadinov, Vazrazhdane leader and presidential candidate, during an election campaign meeting with voters in Sliven.
Kostadinov commented on the attacks against two commercial vessels in the Black Sea off the Bulgarian coast. He noted that it remains unclear who carried out the attacks and questioned why the Bulgarian authorities had sought an explanation from the Russian ambassador without raising the same questions with the Ukrainian side.
The presidential candidate criticized the Bulgarian authorities’ position on the war in Ukraine, stating that, in his view, Bulgaria has been drawn into the conflict through its military assistance to Kyiv and its political support for Ukraine.
Kostadinov also criticized President Iliana Iotova over her actions on foreign policy and national security issues. He expressed disagreement with European countries’ approach towards Russia and warned of the risks of escalating tensions.
The meeting also addressed energy policy, fuel prices and the economic consequences of sanctions against Russia.
Kostadinov called on voters to support his presidential candidacy and that of his nominated vice-presidential candidate, Petar Volgin. He said that the campaign’s goal was to reach the second round of voting and bring about a change in the country’s policies.
