Journalist Chuck Todd shredded the “defiantly incompetent” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Tuesday over plans to livestream the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan.
Todd said:
I keep thinking about the dystopian movies from the ’80s, right? You remember The Running Man with Arnold Schwarzenegger, where society becomes so degraded that state sponsored violence is turned into mass entertainment. Is this what Pete Hegseth grew up watching and idolizing? Man, what a broken mind. He’s kind of… look, the fact is, as much as I get … I get worked up on this guy.
There’s you know, when you see somebody who’s not just incompetent but is defiantly incompetent and so broken and all these things. I mean, he needs help. He clearly does, because if you’re thinking this way, imagine, imagine thinking that there’s an audience for this. Who does he believe wants to watch the government execute somebody? What’s wrong with his mind that he wants to show this and see this?
The plan also offers insight into how Hegseth thinks about supporters of the Trump administration, Todd said.
“Think about the fact that he thinks that maybe this is somehow appealing to the Republican base. Think about what that assumption says about how this administration views its own supporters,” he mused.
Todd added, “There’s a difference between wanting the government to enforce the law and wanting the government to celebrate its ability to kill somebody. That distinction, I think, matters to real conservatives and people that support liberal small L democracy and pluralism.”
There’s another group impacted as well: the military. Todd continued,
Think about the position it puts members of the military in. There’s already one religious freedom advocate saying he didn’t want his children or family watching him pull the trigger. He’s asked not to be included. Imagine the people that have to perform the firing squad. They didn’t… who who signed up to the military to do this? It risks degrading the people. The government is asking to carry out the sentence and for what? What’s the national interest in showing this off?
“And I keep coming back. Apparently, it’s just an obsession or a fascination with just demonstrating power. Look at the power we have,” Todd concluded. “So what, you arrogant f*ck? Pardon my language, but I just… this is grotesque.”
