Fox News host Mark Levin made clear this week he does not agree with President Donald Trump’s call for Ukraine to replace its leader and have new elections amid the ongoing Russian invasion.
Levin shared a post from the Hudson Institute’s Rebeccah Heinrichs on the topic and added, “When will Putin have real elections? He’s been running Russia a lot longer than Zelensky has been president of Ukraine. The same can be said about the Arab countries and more.”
Heinrichs also let loose on the issue in the clip Levin shared, telling Fox Business Network, “In May, I was in Ukraine, and I actually had the opportunity to meet with some of President Zelensky’s political opponents, even rivals, and they agree with President Zelensky that there can be no elections right now until there is a full ceasefire. So the evidence just doesn’t support what we just heard from President Trump, unfortunately. Ukrainians are going to be willing to have an election once we have a ceasefire.”
“The other thing I think is important: I agree with Rich that maybe we can revise the potential deal. We can also import more diesel from allies,” Heinrichs continued, adding:
We actually heard from Prime Minister Carney of Canada that he’d be willing to export more oil. So again, I think what we don’t want to do is inadvertently undermine President Trump’s other good goals, for instance, putting pressure on the Russians to end the conflict. Because Ukraine cannot end the conflict while it is being invaded, as long as Russia continues to execute assaults against Ukrainian infrastructure.
Trump recently fumed at Volodymyr Zelensky, saying, “I suggest they get a new leader who can make a [peace] deal,” adding that “for some reason [Zelenskyy] never does.”
Trump blasted Zelensky for having “lost 30% of your country and you’ve had over a million people go between the two of them, over 2 million people killed. That’s a war that should have never started. And I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president.”
Trump sparked a wave of bipartisan backlash with his latest comments that critics see as ignoring Vladimir Putin instigating the war with Ukraine. Trump also angered many in the GOP with his recent lifting of sanctions on Russia to import diesel to the U.S. in a bid to lower prices before the midterm elections.
