Kimberly Guilfoyle, the former U.S. Ambassador to Greece, attempted to save her cushy job by claiming that texts appearing to show her soliciting money from a Republican megadonor were AI-generated, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Guilfoyle resigned on Tuesday after new White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia announced that the administration had asked her to step down.
Last week, the Journal reported it reviewed Signal messages from Guilfoyle to Eric Deters, in which she asked him to deposit $100,000 in her American Express account.
“It won’t show up anywhere if you wire money to American Express,” she wrote to Deters, a donor to President Donald Trump. “Please.”
Guilfoyle and Deters had reportedly communicated for months as Deters sought help from the Trump administration on some tax and legal problems. Deters had promised Guilfoyle as much as $1 million if she was able to use her connections to the president to help him. The outlet reported that Guilfoyle relayed Deters messages she had sent to the Internal Revenue Service on his behalf. Guilfoyle also told Deters she was lobbying the Department of Justice for him. On Saturday, the Journal published another expose in which Guilfoyle boasted of traveling on private jets owned by Greek businessmen. Additionally, the outlet reported that Guilfoyle had promoted a Greek construction company while working closely with the firm’s chief lobbyist.
On Tuesday, the Journal reported on Guilfoyle’s frantic attempt to save her job.
“When the Journal published a second investigation revealing text messages that showed she had solicited $100,000 from a Trump donor in the run-up to her confirmation hearing last year, Guilfoyle reached out to White House officials to say the text messages were AI generated,” the latest report stated. “The officials didn’t believe her claims, the people said. Journal reporters verified the authenticity of the donor’s text messages.”
The publication went on to say that Guilfolye attempted to find the source of the leaks and accused embassy staff and her security team. She even reportedly called Matthew Boyle of Breitbart to get the publication to lobby the administration in support of her.
Guilfoyle also tried to suppress negative coverage of her, the Journal said. This month, she asked the State Department if it could somehow take down a Daily Mail article that claimed she failed to pay a $1,768 tab for two cases of champagne and dinner. When State Department officials asked Guilfoyle to provide a receipt showing she paid, she did not provide one.
