Employees of the Trigrad State Forestry Enterprise, part of the South Central State Enterprise, on Wednesday captured and relocated one of the two young bears that had repeatedly entered the southern village of Gyovren over the past month. The bear is now in the Kormisosh State Hunting Enterprise, where it will not pose a threat to public safety, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food reported Wednesday.
The operation is the result of joint efforts by the Ministry, the Executive Forestry Agency, the South Central State Enterprise, and the Regional Directorate for Environment and Water in Smolyan.
Gyovren Mayor Snezhana Chavdarova told BTA that the bear had been caught in one of the metal box traps set up around the village. It is believed that the animal is one of the two young cubs that have been repeatedly entering the village since mid-September, searching for food near people’s homes.
Dr. Rosen Andreev, Deputy Director of the Chepino State Hunting Enterprise, told BTA that the bear caught in the trap is two and a half years old. “I cannot say whether the bear is male or female. There is no way to tell without a close look, and it has not been sedated,” added Dr. Andreev. He clarified that the bear was not aggressive and remained calm in the cage.
Dr. Andreev also said that all legal measures have been taken to capture and relocate the bears. He added that the box trap is convenient for this type of capture because it is mounted on a trailer and can be transported to various locations. The advantage is that once the animal enters the trap, it does not need to be sedated, whereas with automatic snare traps, the animal must be sedated. Fifteen cameras have also been installed in the area to track the bears’ movements.
The captured bear has already been released in an area sufficiently far from populated areas. According to him, the animal has lost its wild instincts and is not bothered by the proximity of people. Another problem is that there is plenty of natural food around the village – apples, pears, rose hips, and cornelian cherries – as well as many gardens, some of which are tended and others abandoned, which also attract the bears, Dr. Andreev noted.
The first reports of bears in Gyovren date back to mid-September. The animals were spotted on multiple occasions by security cameras on the streets, near houses, and around garbage containers. In one instance, the bears attacked a chicken coop in the village and killed 21 chickens.
