During a forum on the strategic importance of NATO’s southeastern flank and the Black Sea region for European and global security, held in the US capital, Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Investments and Industry Alexander Poulev said that Bulgaria is ready for joint production and investment in defence and high technology, Poulev’s Ministry reported on Thursday. The forum, organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria, took place during the annual meeting and exhibition of the Association of the US Army and brought together Bulgarian and US companies.
Poulev highlighted Bulgaria’s strategic location, industrial capacity and engineering expertise. The minister stressed the need for stronger defence capabilities and coordination among allies. He also pointed to the country’s role as a transport, logistics and energy hub linking Europe and Asia. He cited the Trans-Caspian Corridor’s potential to create opportunities for Bulgarian ports and logistics networks, Corridor 8’s role in trade and NATO military mobility, and the Vertical Gas Corridor’s contribution to energy security and supply diversification.
Bulgaria’s defence industry can produce ammunition, weapons, missiles and optical systems and provide maintenance and repair services. Unmanned systems, artificial intelligence and space technology also offer growth potential, he noted. “We want to combine Bulgaria’s engineering and technical capacity with US technology and investment. Our F-16 fighter jets and Stryker armoured combat vehicles provide a solid foundation. The next step is joint production, stronger supply chains and regional maintenance centres,” Poulev said.
He highlighted the joint Bulgaria-US declaration on AI cooperation signed during his visit and called for investment, research, secure technology supply chains and closer industrial partnerships.
During his visit, Poulev met with representatives of the White House National Economic Council and with US Deputy Trade Representative David Bisbee. They discussed investment, joint production, technological cooperation, and opportunities for Bulgarian companies to join international supply chains in strategic sectors.
