Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Expert Calls for Long-Term Plan for Nuclear Energy Development

The future of nuclear energy requires a clear, long-term development plan that institutions and operating organizations can unite behind, Assoc. Prof. Pavlin Grоudev of the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences said at the opening of the annual conference “Nuclear Energy for the People”. The conference is being held in Kyustendil until October 17.
He stressed that developing a medium- and long-term strategy is essential for the sustainable development of the sector. The Council of Ministers, the Bulgarian Energy Holding and the National Electricity Company are among the main recipients of the proposals and conclusions emerging from the forum, Grоudev added.
This country is at a crossroads regarding new nuclear capacity, he said. Alongside the plans to build Units 7 and 8 at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant using AP1000 technology, the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) is becoming an increasingly prominent issue in Europe and worldwide.
Various technological options and European initiatives are being considered, including projects involving fast-neutron reactors such as ALFRED and ALLEGRO, which form part of efforts to develop next-generation nuclear technologies. Grоudev noted that Bulgarian scientific and engineering organizations are already participating in some of these international research consortia.
He also highlighted the key role of the operating units at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, which provide nearly 1,000 megawatts of baseload power and help ensure stability not only for Bulgaria’s electricity system but also for the regional market during periods of peak summer demand.
The annual forum of the Bulgarian Nuclear Society, a member of the European Nuclear Society, continues with working sessions and presentations by experts from academia and industry.
