In recent weeks, Russia has been losing territory it previously seized in Ukraine. Putin is escalating the war and has an apparent goal of closing the Black Sea to commercial shipping, MP Ivaylo Mirchev of Democratic Bulgaria told a briefing on the sidelines of the National Assembly.
“Our goal should be to establish a shield in the Black Sea to ensure that commercial shipping is not disrupted,” Mirchev said. According to him, this can only be achieved through close cooperation between Bulgaria, Romania and Turkiye within NATO, as well as by requesting that the Alliance provide enhanced radar surveillance, additional forces along the coastlines of the three countries, fighter aircraft and helicopters to counter drones.
Mirchev argued that moratoriums, memorandums and “all sorts of other ideas that we see the doves of peace waving around” are not a solution.
MP Yordan Yordanov of Democratic Bulgaria called for the Council of Ministers to manage the crisis effectively. He stressed that the Black Sea has become a vast zone of uncertainty, posing serious risks to Bulgaria’s economy and industry.
Yordanov announced that Democratic Bulgaria is submitting a draft resolution to Parliament proposing the establishment of an interagency unit under the government’s Security Council. The unit would assess economic risks to citizens and industry, monitor problems affecting goods whose import and export are becoming prohibitively expensive, and develop compensation mechanisms where necessary to prevent serious damage to the Bulgarian economy.
Yordanov said that Democratic Bulgaria would hold talks with the leadership of the National Assembly today to have the proposal referred to the Transport Committee, which is scheduled to meet at 2.30 pm. The aim is to secure a decision on establishing the unit during the current parliamentary week.
Bozhidar Bozhanov insisted that “Bulgaria must emerge from the corner into which it has retreated under this government and take the lead in shaping developments, rather than calling for moratoriums and memorandums on actions that are already prohibited anyway.”
According to Bozhanov, the government should take the lead in protecting the Black Sea region.
“It is clear who is behind the drone attacks, just as it is clear who is behind the sabotage of Starlink,” the MP said.
In response to a question about the minimum wage, Bozhanov said that Democratic Bulgaria had insisted that the National Assembly establish a clear formula for determining it.
“This was not done. Instead, the government was given a blank cheque,” Bozhanov said.
He announced that Democratic Bulgaria is submitting a proposal for compensation of EUR 0.20 to offset high fuel prices. According to him, this could be financed by using Lukoil’s excessive profits and additional VAT revenues.
Bozhanov emphasised that citizens’ well-being is an extremely important policy priority. For this reason, Democratic Bulgaria will push for a comprehensive compensation package and expects to hear what the budget deficit will be, a figure that was not disclosed yesterday.
