Speaking at forum entitled “Nuclear Energy for the People” and held by the Bulgarian Nuclear Society here on Thursday, Borislav Boev, Secretary of the Bulgarian National Committee of the World Energy Council, said that in Bulgaria, Units 5 and 6 of the Kozloduy NPP continue to play a key role in the power system. According to the data he presented, the plant accounted for about 40% of net electricity generation in 2025, while this year its share is about 37.5%. At the same time, there has been an increase in generation from renewable sources, mainly due to photovoltaic capacity.
Boev noted that in 2025, nuclear energy accounted for about 25% of net electricity generation in the European Union, while the share of renewable energy sources reached about 45%. This year, the ratio remains similar, with renewable sources accounting for nearly 47% of generation.
The expert said that despite the low production costs of nuclear energy, electricity prices in Europe are often determined by gas- and coal-fired power plants, which come online to meet demand during peak hours. This explains the high prices during the evening hours, when production from solar power plants decreases.
Boev said that consumers in Southeastern Europe tend to pay higher electricity prices than their peers in Central and Western Europe. Among the reasons, he highlighted greater reliance on coal-fired power plants and insufficient cross-border transmission capacity, which limits the region’s access to cheaper electricity from other European markets.
Boev highlighted geopolitical risks and lower fill levels in European gas storage facilities as factors that are putting additional pressure on the market. He warned that the combination of these factors could lead to higher electricity prices during the winter months across much of Europe.
As possible solutions, he pointed to the need to develop dispatchable generation capacity, invest in the power transmission infrastructure, and promote long-term electricity supply contracts to provide greater predictability for industry and producers.
