Speaking ahead of the European Council meeting in Brussels on Thursday, Romania’s President Nicusor Dan said that he would push for the planned Romanian-Bulgarian Black Sea Maritime Security Hub to become operational and equipment to be provided. His remarks were livestreamed.
“It is very important for us that our concerns about the Black Sea be reflected in the conclusions of the debate, and that the EU provide support for the civil security centre that we intend to establish jointly with Bulgaria,” he said.
Regarding the latest security incidents in the region, Dan said he had spoken briefly with Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev on Thursday morning and would meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte later in the day, together with Radev.
“We need to see how we can better coordinate our efforts to respond to the increasingly frequent security challenges in the Black Sea,” Dan added.
Asked whether Russia was behind the latest attacks and whether Romania would invoke Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, the President replied that the authorities needed to gather more information about the fires aboard cargo ships in the Black Sea before reaching definitive conclusions and taking action.
“We will have conclusive information soon,” Dan added.
