Industry Representatives Call for Fair Conditions in Agri-Food Supply Chain

In a letter sent to Prime Minister Rumen Radev; Minister of Economy, Investments and Industry Alexander Poulev; Minister of Agriculture and Food Plamen Abrovsky; and the head of the parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, Food and Forestry Yavor Gechev on Thursday; the Fruit and Vegetable Branch Chamber called for consistent oversight, transparency in pricing, and fair conditions for Bulgarian producers throughout the agri-food supply chain. The call was backed by the Bulgarian Greenhouse Growers’ Association and the National Association of the Producers and Processors of Nuts.
The reason for the letter is the Modern Trade Association’s request that the sector be considered critical infrastructure. Manufacturers insist that the strategic importance of trade should not serve as a basis for preferential treatment or for limiting inspections by the Commission for Consumer Protection, the Commission for Protection of Competition, and the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency.
The industry representatives’ position is that while retail chains play an important role in the supply of food and in getting it to consumers, they represent the final link in a process that begins on the farm. Logistical capacity and well-stocked shelves alone do not guarantee food sovereignty, if the country loses the ability to produce its own food.
The organizations emphasized that food sovereignty requires viable Bulgarian farms and fair market access for their products. Among the producers’ demands are transparency in pricing, oversight of food safety and origin, and legislative measures to strengthen the position of agricultural producers.
