Bulgaria sees Cyprus as a close partner and ally both within the European Union (EU) and at regional level, National Assembly Chair Mihaela Dotsova said, as quoted by the Bulgarian Parliament on Thursday. She made the remarks during a meeting with Cyprus House of Representatives President Annita Demetriou on the sidelines of the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament in Rome.
The conference brings together parliamentary speakers from Council of Europe member States.
Dotsova said the level of trust achieved between Bulgaria and Cyprus provides a solid basis for further developing bilateral relations in the interests of both countries and the wider region. She said Bulgaria would work consistently to deepen cooperation between the two parliaments, including their friendship groups, and seek opportunities for a more active political dialogue on European issues.
She also praised the cooperation and constructive approach during the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, saying that in a complex international environment it had helped preserve EU unity and advance a number of strategic files important to the Union’s resilience.
Demetriou said Bulgaria and Cyprus were good allies and friends.
The European Conference of Presidents of Parliament was opened by Italian Chamber of Deputies President Lorenzo Fontana, Italian Senate President Ignazio La Russa, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Petra Bayr, and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
The forum is discussing resilient democracies and hybrid threats, artificial intelligence and the labour market, and the role of parliaments in renewing the rules-based international order and responding to contemporary crises.
