An operation to secure and tow the drifting cargo ship CHELSEA-3 to the Bulgarian port of Burgas has been temporarily suspended by order of the Burgas harbour master due to sharply deteriorating weather conditions and rough seas, the Transport and Communications Ministry said on Thursday.
At around 1 p.m, the specialized tugboat Aliot reached the vessel. An assessment was carried out to determine whether an emergency response team could board the ship, but weather conditions prevented the transfer, the Ministry said.
Aliot and the rescue boat Spasitel 2, operated by the Maritime Administration Executive Agency, had set out earlier on Thursday to secure the vessel and tow it to Burgas.
Earlier in the day, the Ministry reported that CHELSEA-3 had entered Bulgaria’s 12-nautical-mile territorial waters east of Primorsko.
The Malta-flagged vessel was struck by drones in the early hours of October 13, approximately 17 nautical miles east of Byala. It had been sailing without cargo from the Turkish port of Giresun to Giurgiulesti in Moldova.
All 15 crew members were rescued following the attack, while the vessel remained anchored at sea.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Rumen Radev reported new drone attacks on ships in the Black Sea. They came seven days after sea and aerial drones struck two other merchant vessels in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone.
