Security in the Black Sea, connectivity and parliamentary dialogue were among the topics discussed by Bulgarian National Assembly Chair Mihaela Dotsova and Italian Chamber of Deputies President Lorenzo Fontana on Thursday. The two spoke on the sidelines of the European Conference of Presidents of Parliaments of the Member States of the Council of Europe in Rome, the press centre of the Bulgarian Parliament said.
Dotsova expressed her concern over attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea and noted that a common solution must be sought to ensure the safety of shipping. Stability in the region is of utmost importance to Europe, which is why solidarity and shared responsibility are needed, the National Assembly Chair was quoted as saying in the press release.
On behalf of the Bulgarian Parliament, she reaffirmed her desire for the comprehensive development of bilateral dialogue and cooperation, which would support and complement the intensive joint work at intergovernmental level. She informed her Italian counterpart that a Friendship Group with Italy had been established in the National Assembly, with MPs from all parliamentary forces among its members. “I am confident that the Group will help deepen ties between our parliaments and promote dynamic and fruitful cooperation in all areas,” Dotsova added.
The National Assembly Chair stressed that not only economic relations but also educational and cultural ties should be developed. She said that Italian is taught in more than 50 schools in Bulgaria, the Parliament’s press centre added.
Italian Chamber of Deputies President Lorenzo Fontana called for the development of relations between the two countries, which he described as excellent, the statement also said.
