Even the most jaded critics of President Donald Trump were appalled after he issued an executive order late Friday night shielding Russia from Congressionally approved sanctions.
The measure had been championed by late South Carolina Sen. Lindsay Graham in the months before the Republican’s shocking, sudden death in July.
In September, Trump signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 , which was meant to penalize Russian officials, wealthy elites, and financial institutions while targeting countries that continue purchasing Russian energy.

But things have changed since last month.
The bill had green lit tariffs of up to 100% on imports from major buyers of Russian oil and gas and Trump has since announced a deal for Russia — to bail out the American diesel market as prices soared due to Trump’s war in Iran which has been dragging on for nearly eight months.
Tom Nichols, a writer for The Atlantic who frequently writes about Trump’s relationship with Russia, was quick to label the Friday night executive order pausing the sanctions as “horrifying.”
Bloomberg Congressional reporter Steven T. Dennis recalled the words of Graham’s sister, Darline Graham, who was appointed by Trump to fill his remaining Senate term.

“Darline Graham on the passage of her bill named after her brother: ‘This legislation tells Russia’s customers that the United States of America will not sit by while they fund Putin’s assault,’” he wrote on X.
“Tonight, Trump decided to waive the sanctions, days after he decided the US and the world should buy Russian diesel instead.”
Darline Graham has not yet publicly responded to the executive order pausing the Russian sanctions. Her office could not immediately be reached by Mediaite.
Other critics were equally stunned:
Rozen, a former Politico reporter, added that the pausing of the sanctions in a bill meant to honor the late Graham appeared to be a fitting example of the senator’s relationship with the president.
“The whole thing—many months of Graham & allies pushing uphill to get Trump onboard Russia sanctions, which finally passed after Graham’s death—followed a month later by Trump entirely gutting it— seems to perfectly encapsulate what one could see of the Graham Trump relationship,” she wrote on X.
