President Donald Trump is blaming his top advisors and operatives for a “faltering midterm strategy,” according to a new report.
Trump has been questioning campaign midterm spending, questioning candidate choices and redistricting efforts, and targeting some of his top advisors for what he sees as major missteps, Reuters reported, citing three people familiar with internal conversations.
The two top operatives in the hot seat for the president reportedly are James Blair, who heads the MAGA Inc. Super PAC, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
For Blair, Trump has reportedly been questioning how the $200 million from MAGA Inc. has been spent. One person that spoke with Reuters suggested there is a chance the president could shut down more spending going forward, with the midterms just weeks away.
Another one of the sources described the current situation around Trump’s top allies as a “circular firing squad” with Blair faulting the White House and Wiles faulting Blair for lagging polling for Republicans.
Trump publicly defended Wiles this week after Politico dropped a report suggesting the president was receiving negative feedback about Wiles from some of his allies.
“TOTAL FAKE NEWS Politico doesn’t care about facts, integrity, or honest journalism — it’s why I kicked them out of the White House!” Trump posted to Truth Social, referring to his controversial media ban which a judge has temporarily halted. “Susie Wiles is my loyal and longest serving Chief of Staff — there is a reason for that. She has been with me since the beginning, is my trusted advisor, and has my COMPLETE confidence.”
Trump has meanwhile had some public friction with Blair. In October, the president said he would terminate Blair and fellow advisor Chris LaCivita if they had conflicts of interest following the two going to Republika Srpska, a self-governing region of Bosnia, to consult on local elections. Trump reportedly felt this trip was a distraction.
In a Truth Social post, Trump called the men “outside consultants” with many clients.
“I do not have any idea who else they work for but will, on reflection, ask them and, if there’s a conflict, I will terminate them, immediately!” he wrote.
“All of this mudslinging is ridiculous, and counterproductive. President Trump and me are focused on helping Republicans win in November. Every other Republican should be doing the same,” Blair told Reuters in a statement.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle also pushed back on the reporting, saying the sources are “armchair experts peddling their baseless speculation.”
