Hungarian Parliament Foreign Policy Committee Chair Highlights Longstanding Ties between Bulgaria, Hungary 2026

Meeting with participants in the 21st World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Budapest on Monday, Marton Hajdu, Chair of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Hungarian Parliament, said that the peoples of Bulgaria and Hungary were celebrating their friendship, noting that they had coexisted for more than 600 years.
He said that their long coexistence had forged strong bonds, reflected, among other things, in words borrowed into the Hungarian language, and noted that these ties could not be broken by any authority.
Hajdu noted that Bulgaria and Hungary were both members of the EU and NATO, faced similar challenges and were connected by the Danube River.
Recalling that October 19 had been designated as Bulgarian-Hungarian Friendship Day, he stressed the importance of the date having been made official through a joint political decision, which he said demonstrated how much the friendship meant to both peoples.
He also praised Bulgarians for preserving their language and culture, saying that the countries’ longstanding ties continued to enrich both nations. He stressed the importance of giving substance to contemporary relations through debate and mutual respect. In his view, friendship did not require agreement on everything, but rather mutual respect and a willingness to work together. He expressed hope that this friendship would grow stronger in the future.
Participants in the meeting will have an opportunity to tour the parliament building and view the Holy Crown of Hungary. The delegation will be welcomed by Zoltan Tarr, Hungary’s Minister of Social Relations and Culture, and Bulgarian Education and Science Minister Prof. Georgi Valchev.
Organized by the Bulgarian News Agency, the 21st World Meeting of Bulgarian Media will be held in Budapest and Esztergom, Hungary, on October 19 and 20, 2026, with the support of DSK Bank, OTP Group, Aurubis Bulgaria, A1, SOF Connect, the operator of Vasil Levski Sofia Airport, Geotechmin Ltd., Postbank and the 13 Centuries Bulgaria National Endowment Fund.
