Bulgaria supports open and constructive dialogue between the European Union (EU) and China, Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova said on Monday after meeting with her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, who is on an official visit to Bulgaria.
The two discussed EU-China relations, among other topics. Bulgaria welcomes the first tangible results of consultations on trade and investment that emerged in October, Petrova added.
Petrova said economic ties were an important part of the partnership between Bulgaria and China and were developing dynamically. She said the two countries sought to ensure that this momentum was sustainable and mutually beneficial. “We discussed speeding up procedures for granting market access to Bulgarian agricultural and food products. Mutual investment is the surest path to closer economic integration, and we see significant untapped potential in this area,” Petrova explained. “We paid particular attention to connectivity between Europe and Asia. In 2027, Bulgaria will host a regional connectivity summit organized jointly with the European Commission. A key focus will be connectivity along the Middle Corridor, as well as between Europe and the countries of the Persian Gulf,” Petrova said.
She also said the positive cooperation in traditional areas such as education, science, culture, sports, youth exchanges and tourism.
Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister said the country valued the visa-free regime for Bulgarian citizens and expressed hope that it would continue. “We support efforts to establish a direct air link between the two countries,” Velislava Petrova added.
Wang said that China is ready to deepen cooperation with Bulgaria in green development and artificial intelligence. He highlighted joint work in energy storage, which, he said, was helping Bulgaria take a leading position in Europe in terms of energy storage capacity.
He added he had held in-depth talks with Petrova and that the two sides had reached a consensus. Wang voiced readiness to develop the strategic partnership, promote connectivity between Europe and Asia, and give fresh impetus to relations between China and the European Union.
The Chinese Foreign Minister highlighted trust, friendship, cooperation and partnership as the main messages of his recent tour of Azerbaijan, Croatia, Montenegro and Bulgaria. Before visiting Bulgaria, he attended the seventh summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia as a special representative of Chinese President Xi Jinping. All four countries participate in and benefit from China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Wang cited the Gobustan photovoltaic power plant in Azerbaijan, the Peljesac Bridge in Croatia, Montenegro’s Bar-Boljare motorway project and energy storage cooperation with Bulgaria as examples of partnerships tailored to national circumstances and citizens’ needs. He voiced China’s readiness to deepen cooperation with all four countries.
Wang also stressed the importance of cultural exchanges between East and West, emphasizing that Bulgaria was home to the Balkans’ first Confucius Institute and first Chinese cultural centre. He said China favoured partnerships over alliances and dialogue over confrontation, adding that the three Balkan countries he visited supported closer China-Europe relations and wanted stronger cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European countries.
China aims to be a reliable, long-term strategic partner for these countries, Wang said, adding that bilateral ties, regional cooperation and China-EU relations could develop in parallel and reinforce one another. He described progress in China-EU trade and investment consultations as evidence that differences could be managed through dialogue. He called for stronger multilateral cooperation, free trade and mutually beneficial economic ties, arguing that openness brings progress while isolation leads to falling behind.
Ahead of the 15th anniversary of the China-Central and Eastern European Countries cooperation mechanism, Wang called for its further development. He also stressed that trust was essential to peace, saying that resolving the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East required communication, dialogue, consultation and mutual understanding. Following talks with representatives of Israel, Palestine and other Middle Eastern countries at the summit, he said China would continue working to build trust and help resolve international crises and conflicts.
