A ceremony presenting the Doctor of the Year Award and marking the 125th anniversary of the Bulgarian Medical Association (BMA) was held here on Monday. The award went to Prof. Kaloyan Davidoff MD.
Attending the ceremony were President Iliana Iotova, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Galab Donev, Health Minister Katya Ivkova, Ombudsman Velislava Delcheva, representatives of the National Health Insurance Fund, the Bulgarian Dental Association and the Bulgarian Pharmaceutical Union, doctors, members of the academic community and other guests.
In her address, Iotova said society still needed inspiring examples and greater recognition of doctors’ achievements and the high standard of medicine in Bulgaria. She said it was important to tell the stories of doctors who treat patients every day and give them hope through their care. Society could not thrive if people only expect things from others without giving anything in return, she said, adding that doctors deserve decent working conditions in Bulgaria. However advanced medicine becomes, adequate funding remains essential, Iotova said, adding that she saw the Finance Minister’s presence at the ceremony as a guarantee of this commitment.
Addressing Health Minister Katya Ivkova, Iotova said she was taking over a healthcare system that functioned in major cities but faced problems in smaller communities, where hospital departments were closing. Ensuring a fair healthcare system and access to healthcare for everyone, as enshrined in the Constitution, would be the minister’s responsibility, the President added.
Deputy Prime Minister Galab Donev said in his address that responsibility for change is shared and requires ongoing dialogue and cooperation between the State, the BMA, universities, healthcare facilities and the medical profession. Only in this way can sustainable solutions for the healthcare system be found, he added. The discussion about the future of Bulgarian healthcare must begin today, focusing on people, as the quality of healthcare depends not only on financial resources and equipment, but above all on the people who work in it. For this reason, the future of Bulgarian healthcare is inconceivable without young doctors, Donev said, adding that creating conditions for their professional development and encouraging them to remain in Bulgaria was one of the system’s key priorities.
Bulgarian Medical Association Chair Dr Nikolay Branzalov said that over the years, people with whom one had shared a journey came to be valued more and more. Marking the organization’s 125th anniversary, he noted that generations, social conditions, opportunities and challenges had changed, but the need for doctors to have a professional organization had remained constant. The true history of the Bulgarian Medical Association is above all the history of the doctors who founded it, those who fought for its continued existence and the generations who passed on the responsibility to carry its work forward, Branzalov said.
Health Minister Ivkova said that behind the medical teams stand the nurses, midwives, and everyone else who supports them. “The responsibility for the future of healthcare and the health of our nation rests on your shoulders,” Minister Ivkova told those in attendance. “The Health Ministry is your reliable partner, and all of your suggestions will be discussed openly and transparently,” she also said.
