Young doctors and medical professionals protested in front of the Ministry of Health on Tuesday night with demands for better working conditions, more decent pay, and comprehensive healthcare reform. The demonstration was organized by the National Protest: Future in Bulgaria Initiative Committee under the slogan “Aren’t You Ashamed?”.
One of the organizers, Dr Beloslava Tomova, told BTA: “Today we have gathered once again in front of the Ministry of Health because we do not see sufficient progress on our demands – the digitization of the specialization process and the appointment of specialists, as well as decent pay for healthcare professionals, not only for doctors but for everyone else as well.”
Tomova said that most of her colleagues, at least recent graduates, are working under an enormous workload for low monthly salaries ranging from EUR 700 to 1,000. She added: “Our goal is to ensure that we have high base salaries, rather than relying on additional financial incentives, which may or may not be available.”
Another organizer, Dr Daniel Kiprov, said that among the protesters’ demands is a unified portal for residency programmes with clear, transparent, and traceable conditions, where all hospitals and medical facilities would be required to publish everything, and applications would be accepted exclusively through this portal.
