A total of 1,435 preventive medical examinations and tests will be carried out using mobile medical units provided by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry said on Wednesday. The initiative covers 17 regions across the country and aims to improve access to healthcare in communities where preventive care and timely diagnosis often remain difficult to access.
The focus will be on maternal and child health, the early detection of diseases and immunisation. Medical teams will reach people from vulnerable communities, including Roma citizens and families facing social hardship.
Under an order issued by Health Minister Katya Ivkova, the mobile units are being made available free of charge, while the Ministry is providing funding for the medical services.
The programme provides for 360 obstetric and gynaecological examinations in the regions of Pazardzhik, Sliven, Sofia, and Targovishte, including cytological and microbiological tests and the prescription of treatment where necessary.
A further 500 preventive examinations are planned for children in the regions of Kyustendil, Silistra, Burgas, and Sliven. Examinations and immunisations will also be carried out through mobile general practice units in the regions of Varna, Pleven, Vidin and Vratsa, including vaccinations for children aged under 18.
The programme also envisages 170 examinations using a mobile fluorography unit in the regions of Sliven and Blagoevgrad, as well as 195 ultrasound examinations in the regions of Shumen, Stara Zagora, and Vratsa. A further 210 examinations and laboratory tests will be carried out in the regions of Stara Zagora, Dobrich, and Vidin, including full blood counts and blood glucose and cholesterol tests.
The examinations will be organized by the regional health inspectorates in partnership with healthcare providers. Health mediators will help inform local communities and direct patients to the medical teams, the Ministry of Health said.
The Ministry explained that the mobile units place the emphasis on proactive preventive care, bringing healthcare directly to people rather than leaving them to postpone seeking medical attention because of distance, transport difficulties or social barriers.
The initiative is part of the implementation of the healthcare priority under the 2024–2027 National Action Plan for the National Strategy for Equality, Inclusion and Participation of Roma (2021–2030).
On October 5, the Health Ministry said that an updated COVID-19 vaccine and nasal vaccines against seasonal influenza have been made available for immunisation campaigns during the 2026–2027 autumn and winter season.
