The Interreg VI-A Greece-Bulgaria Cooperation Programme will host a high-level meeting on Friday to mark the official opening of the new Dimario-Rudozem border crossing between Greece and Bulgaria, acccording to a press release on the Programme’s website. The event will bring together representatives of the European Commission (DG REGIO), the Programme National Authorities of Greece (Ministry of Finance and Economy) and Bulgaria (Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works), regional and local authorities (Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, the District Administration of Smolyan), project partners (Egnatia Odos S.A., the Bulgarian Road Infrastructure Agency), Programme bodies and institutional actors involved in territorial cooperation and regional development.
The crossing’s opening is described as a landmark achievement in European territorial cooperation and a major step forward for connectivity, mobility and regional development in the Greece-Bulgaria cross-border area.
The meeting will present the CrossBo and CrossBo2 infrastructure development projects supported by the Interreg V-A Greece-Bulgaria Programme in the 2014-2020 and the 2021-2027 programme periods, respectively. The border crossing’s opening marks the completion of CrossBo, which was designed to improve cross-border accessibility and strengthen connections to the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). With a total budget of approximately EUR 22 million, CrossBo 2 aims to further improve accessibility to TEN-T corridors, strengthen road safety, enhance territorial cohesion and ensure the long-term functionality of the newly established border crossing, the press release reads.
The meeting will also feature a policy discussion on “The Importance of Connectivity and Mobility in the Cross-Border Area.” Representatives of EU, national, regional and local institutions will explore the opportunities created by the new border crossing, future infrastructure priorities, investment needs and the actions required to maximise the socio-economic benefits of improved cross-border accessibility.
Participants in the forum will symbolically cross the Bulgarian-Greek border. At the end of the meeting, there will be a ceremony to honour the individuals who played an important role in making the border crossing possible.
