Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that Starlink and Starshield services have returned their “normal” speeds following bombshell reports on access being restricted and President Donald Trump allegedly pushing Elon Musk to fix the problem.
“The most important thing today is that Starlink and Starshield operations have been restored to the speeds we had before the restrictions. The speeds are now where they need to be,” Zelensky wrote on X.
He continued:
The restoration began overnight, and by this morning, speeds were already sufficient. This matters: for our frontline logistics, for defending Ukraine against jet-powered “shaheds.”
I thank all Americans and all our partners who took this seriously and truly helped – members of Congress, senators, all the media, the State Department, and the President. Protecting lives matters.
The announcement followed Zelensky saying the day prior that the “speed” of the satellite internet service had not yet been restored.
The Wall Street Journal reported that service for Ukraine had been restricted, causing disruptions for the country and confusion in Trump’s administration.
According to the report, which cited U.S. officials and three people familiar with the situation, “Elon Musk ordered the slowdown of a military-grade version of Starlink relied on by Ukraine, a decision that sparked panic in Kyiv and confusion inside the Trump administration.”
Ukrainian officials said the restrictions cause the military trouble in operating high-speed drones and intercepting attacks from Russia.
A later report from the Journal claimed Trump personally contacted Musk about the disruption in service and he pressed the billionaire to remove the restrictions.
Trump told the press on Friday that he would get the situation “straightened out.”
“If there is a problem, I’ll get it straightened out,” the president said. “Elon will never do anything wrong. I know him very well. He’s a fair person, and you know it’s an unusual situation where they’re talking to a private company. But he’s not going to do anything that’s wrong.”
