The Bulgarian Interior Ministry said on Saturday that the Cybercrime Directorate of the General Directorate for Combating Organised Crime (GDCOC) had no involvement in the deactivation of several satirical Facebook pages, responding to numerous media enquiries.
Earlier in the day, MP Ivaylo Mirchev, co-chair of Yes, Bulgaria, said in a post on X that three pages, “Kopeikin”, “Puylo” and “BG Elves”, had been taken down simultaneously. He expressed suspicions that the Interior Ministry or the State Agency for National Security (SANS) might have been involved.
Mirchev alleged that state institutions were using powers granted to them by Facebook to censor content critical of the government. He said he had contacted representatives of the social media platform to establish whether any Bulgarian authorities had abused their powers and pledged to make the findings public.
In its statement, the Interior Ministry suggested that the pages might have been deactivated following mass reporting by users or as a result of a decision by the company that owns Facebook.
