“It is an illusion to think that we can change anything in the country if citizens do not vote,” incumbent President Iliana Iotova, who is seeking a full term in office, told journalists after the close of voting on Sunday.
Iotova said many changes would be needed in the coming years to prevent Bulgaria from returning to a period of stagnation during which the country had missed numerous opportunities.
She expressed confidence that Bulgaria would prosper in the years ahead.
“We will continue to run a positive campaign,” Iotova said, stressing that she wanted to be “a president of peace”.
Iotova thanked all citizens who had exercised their right to vote that day, as well as the voters who had supported her presidential ticket. She also thanked them for “not being afraid” and for “not giving in to attempts to pressure them into staying at home”.
“We hold a trump card, and here in Southeast Europe we will ensure that Bulgaria becomes a guarantor of security for the entire continent,” Iotova said.
“War is raging in Europe. Throughout this campaign, I have spoken about being a Bulgarian president who will be a president of peace, because without peace there can be no security or prosperity. Our message of peace must be heard, and that is what we will work towards over the coming week – we will engage even more emphatically with our voters and all Bulgarian citizens,” Iotova said.
“Bulgaria has a strong position and a sovereign policy, of course in cooperation with our partners. This is very important because, as president of all Bulgarians, I do not want foreign flags waving in our squares. I want to see Bulgarian flags and people who feel secure and think about their future, about how to develop their families and how to work for children and young people. These are my messages,” Iotova said.
“Our messages will be addressed to all Bulgarian citizens. We will continue to run a positive campaign. The period of stagnation I spoke about was a time of division, and I would not want Bulgaria to be governed once again by makeshift political coalitions, but by a stable government,” Iotova said.
According to Iotova, GERB’s decision not to participate in the elections as the second-largest political force had also affected voter turnout. Asked whether she would seek GERB’s support, Iotova replied that her messages would be addressed to all Bulgarian citizens.
“We did not engage in negative campaigning or campaign against our opponents, but all of them campaigned against us in that way. Our main goal will be to get Bulgaria’s citizens actively involved and voting in these elections,” Iotova added.
Iotova’s running mate Kiril Valchev said that, for the first time in Bulgaria’s history, a woman had won the vote in a presidential election.
At the time of the statement, no final official results were available.
“I want to address Georgi Kandev and ask him to be a man. I invite him to a debate and hope he will not hide, as he did for the debate on the Referendum programme of Bulgarian National Television,” Valchev added.
