Balgarianovinite.com Deputy Defence Minister Radostin Iliev took part in the annual South-Eastern Europe Defence Ministerial (SEDM) Meeting, which was held in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday, the Ministry reported.
The meeting was opened by SEDM Chair, Ambassador Eleftherios Angelopoulos. Participants were welcomed by the Defence Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Zukan Helez, and by Greece’s Deputy Minister of National Defence, Athanasios Davakis, in his capacity as representative of the country chairing the SEDM Process.
The discussions focused on the progress achieved and the opportunities for further development of the initiative, the prospects for the South-Eastern Europe Brigade (SEEBRIG), as well as other current issues of regional security and defence cooperation.
Iliev highlighted the significant role the SEDM Process has played for more than a quarter of a century in strengthening good-neighbourly relations and in the Euro-Atlantic integration of the countries in the region. He stressed the need to focus efforts on adapting to new security challenges. He confirmed that Bulgaria will fulfil its obligations under the Agreement on Multinational Peace Forces in South-Eastern Europe and will nominate the next SEEBRIG commander.
The heads of the national delegations of the Member States also briefed participants on their countries’ positions regarding the future of the SEDM Process, the situation in Ukraine and key security issues. At the end of the meeting, a joint declaration of the defence ministers was adopted.
As part of his visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Deputy Minister Radostin Iliev will hold meetings on Friday with EUFOR Commander Major General Florin-Marian Barbu and with Bulgarian service members participating in the EU’s Operation Althea.
