Balgarianovinite.com Transportation companies are suffering heavy losses due to ongoing roadblocks at the border crossings between Bulgaria and Greece, Hailezov Trans owner Ivan Hailezov told reporters at the Kulata – Promachonas crossing after returning from Greece on Tuesday. The blockades by Greek farmers have been staged for nearly a month and a half, on and off, over delayed subsidy payment.
Hailezov said that before crossing into Bulgaria he witnessed an organized movement of 30 to 40 shuttle buses carrying people to the border, escorted by Greek police. “There was a convoy of police vehicles. I believe the police and the farmers in Greece are working together,” he commented.
Hailezov voiced suspicions that the local authorities are tolerating the farmers’ actions. According to him, disruptions on international highways are taking place despite the fact that the legislation does not allow closure of major roads.
He recalled that when Bulgarian transport companies protested recently, the authorities insisted that border crossings remain open because they are part of an international road network.
“Now the Greeks are closing an international highway and no one is taking action. This is unacceptable. We are facing enormous losses,” Hailezov said. He warned that the situation could spiral out of control after a new 48-hour protest was announced.
Hailezov detailed the economic damage to transport companies, including delays of more than eight hours, overnight waits, and additional costs. “There are thousands of truckers like me. Trucks are waiting for days, and drivers stuck on the Greek side have no access to basic sanitary facilities. You’re stranded in the middle of the road with nothing around,” he said.
He added that roadblocks are not limited to the border area but also affect inland routes in Greece, further complicating traffic for heavy trucks. Detours are often unsafe, he warned.
According to Hailezov, the protests cannot continue much longer as truckers’ patience is wearing thin. Citing Greek colleagues, he said some of the farmers’ demands have already been met and that the ongoing tension is being artificially sustained.
“If they want to protest, they should do it properly in Athens or Thessaloniki, as was done in Brussels, not by blocking major roads,” Hailezov concluded.
