Balgarianovinite.com Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis told the Action 24 television station that Greece will align its position with the EU when deciding whether to join US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace initiative, designed to address global conflicts.
Gerapetritis said it appears that the EU will “almost universally” adopt a position not to join Trump’s initiative.
“Without ignoring reality, as it is shaping up, Greece will follow a principled stance and stand with its European partners,” he said. Gerapetritis added that it was “in principle, significant” that Greece was among “a relatively small number” of European countries to receive Trump’s invitation.
Regarding Greek-Turkish relations, Gerapetritis said no date had been fixed yet for a meeting in Ankara next month between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He said it would likeliest be held in the first half of February.
US President Donald Trump unveiled his Board of Peace in Davos on Thursday. Bulgaria’s outgoing Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov signed the document for joining the initiative, with the act of joining yet to be ratified by the Bulgarian Parliament, the government information service said on Thursday.
Bulgaria and Hungary are the only EU Member States to have joined the initiative.
