Balgarianovinite.com Atanas Atanassov, leader of Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB), which is part of the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) coalition, Saturday told Bulgarian National Television that “the entire old red nomenklatura and parts of the new one have lined up behind [former president Rumen] Radev. “That is his electoral base,” he added. “I believe that there are no conditions under which our coalition could cooperate with Radev,” Atanassov said.
“Presidential elections are different. During his first and second terms, it was very convenient for him to face not particularly strong candidates nominated by GERB. But now, on the parliamentary political terrain, the situation is completely different. He will have to give answers,” Atanassov said.
“We are serious opponents of his, especially when it comes to foreign policy,” Atanassov said. He added that during Radev’s nine years as president, he cannot recall Radev being received in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain or Italy. “He has no trust across Western Europe, because they are aware of his ‘red lining’,” Atanassov said.
Commenting on the contract Radev’s caretaker government signed with Turkish energy company BOTAS in 2023, the DSB leader said it is a major corruption scheme. “Where was the prosecution service, and why did it not launch an investigation?” Atanassov asked. One of the reasons for limiting Radev’s powers in appointing caretaker governments was precisely this case, he added. “Radev is now coming forward and declaring that he will form an anti-corruption bloc. Yes, but he will split it along a Russian line,” Atanassov said.
He believes that CC-DB “have grounds to compete to become the largest political force.” “We have support. We organized the public resistance against [outgoing Prime Minister Rosen] Zhelyazkov’s puppet government,” Atanassov said.
He argued that it was possible that GERB leader Boyko Borissov and Radev could make “some kind of generals’ gambit” after the elections.
Atanassov reiterated that Andrey Gyurov should be appointed caretaker prime minister, arguing that there is no one else from the pool of eligible candidates for the post who could guarantee a fair vote.
The DSB leader described Bulgaria’s joining the Board of Peace as “a total embarrassment.” He criticized the outgoing government for rushing the decision, adding that they would seek, through parliamentary means, to clarify how the decision was made and whether everyone had signed off on it.
