Balgarianovinite.com The Regional Court in the northern town of Svishtov has ordered pre-trial detention for two defendants charged in a case involving violence against animals. The proceedings were held behind closed doors. The two suspects – a man and a woman – were charged with torturing animals, filming the abuse, and selling the videos online.
The man’s court-appointed lawyer, Ventsislav Foti, said the defence would not appeal the decision, arguing that detention was lawful and necessary due to sufficient evidence and a real risk of reoffending. Prosecutors noted that the investigation is expected to be lengthy and may involve a European Investigation Order, as foreign nationals – reportedly German citizens – are suspected of ordering and using the videos. The woman also requested to remain in custody, according to supervising prosecutor Kalinka Todorova, despite her lawyer arguing she has no prior convictions, has stable employment, and claimed she was coerced into participating.
The investigation was launched following a report by an environmental organization. Prosecutors have opened pre-trial proceedings for two offenses: extreme cruelty toward vertebrate animals committed for profit, and the creation and distribution of pornographic material via information technologies. The charges carry potential prison sentences of two to eight years and fines, with higher penalties possible if profit motive is proven. The case remains under the supervision of the Svishtov office of the Veliko Tarnovo District Prosecutor’s Office.
